TEXTING TIPS to get your friends to vote for Kamala
You can still make a difference in this election
Are you worried about Kamala Harris’s chances next week?
You should be! She is still behind in many polls.
But fortunately: YOU YOU YOU can make a difference this weekend — just using the device you are (probably) holding in your hand right now.
The most effective “phone bank” happens when you are calling and texting the voters you ALREADY KNOW.
This is especially true if you happen to know any people in the seven critical swing states:
Pennsylvania
Michigan
Wisconsin
Georgia
North Carolina
Nevada
Arizona.
Do you have any relatives, friends or old Facebook buddies in any of those states? If so, why not reach out to them this weekend?
Here’s one way to do it:
FIRST TEXT:
“Election time! What a crazy year!! Must be nuts to live in a swing state!
[[NOTE: Wait for a response. If there is not response after 6-10 hours, just send a friendly emoji as a gentle prompt. If there is still no response, just let it drop. They either don’t want to talk to you — or they don’t want to talk about politics. And that’s fine.]]
SECOND TEXT:
Wow! Do most of the folks you know like Kamala more or Trump more?
[[NOTE: People are more honest about — and more comfortable discussing— other people’s preferences, rather than their own.]]
THIRD TEXT:
“Interesting!! Can we hop on a call? I want to get the real scoop. Media never gets it right!!”
NEXT STEPS:
Get them on the call.
Ask them a bunch of questions—just to honestly learn. Catch up.
Then tell them you are for Kamala.
Ask what they think of that.
Respond with why—if that’s needed.
If they are for Kamala, ask if they are voting or have already voted? Encourage them to early vote if they can—so they can see if there are any problems with their registration. Ask them how many people they will bring with them.
If they are for Trump at this point, you probably CANNOT change their mind. A friendly little debate might be worth it for 2-3 minutes, but DO NOT KILL YOUR FRIENDSHIP over this. It’s not worth it.
If your friend is neutral or undecided, do this:
Ask them: “What would you need to hear or learn about Kamala for her to get your vote?”
Write down what they say. If you can answer, do it.
If you can’t, say, “I will find those answers and call you back.”
Get the answers using Google. Call back.
REMEMBER: The key is to ask QUESTIONS—so whatever you say RESPONDS to what they say. Also, people will listen better to YOU if you first listen well to THEM.
Please don’t just launch into a rant against Trump. You can say how much you dislike him or fear him. But people nonetheless do have a right to vote for whomever they choose.
Besides: why waste precious time, energy and upset over a lost cause. Tell them you love them and miss them—and move on to the next call.
WHAT TO SAY ABOUT KAMALA:
Also an anti-Trump rant may not be what’s needed.
Maybe what would really help them is knowing Kamala’s “policies” — WHICH ARE:
$6K tax breaks for newborns
$25K for first-time home buyers
$50K to start a new business
Fight for lower drug prices.
Build 3 million new houses. etc.
These steps alone will bring some costs down costs for everyone. She will pay for this by taxing billionaires and corporations.
WHAT TO SAY ABOUT TRUMP:
Most people already have heard people call Trump a rude, bigoted authoritarian.
Screaming that into the phone may not be the most effective approach for changing minds.
Trump’s key weakness is that he is pretending that he is an economic genius. But he is not!
Trump DID NOT create a good economy when he was President.
He inherited a good economy from Obama.
The day Trump walked in the White House door, America was ALREADY enjoying a soaring stock market and 70+ months of straight job growth.
The main thing Trump did was give a tax break to his billionaire buddies, chase off all his good staff and botch the COVID crisis.
Even if your friend believes that Trump did a great job last time, Trump’s economic policies THIS TIME are much different (and much worse) than the policies he implemented last time.
By imposing 20 percent tariffs on everything we buy — and deporting all the lower-paid workers — Trump’s policies will send prices through the roof.
Trump will be the King of Inflation — the Father of Inflation.
That’s why nearly every major economist is opposing Trump’s plans.
Kamala’s policies will bring costs down — for child care, housing, small businesses, you name it.
So it’s higher prices with Trump. Lower costs with Kamala. If they don’t believe you, it’s okay. At least they heard the argument. And that’s all you can do.
You can also call and text voters you don’t know to help get them to the polls. This link will take you to Kamala’s page, where there are resources to help you.
Also, there’s an app called SWIPE BLUE that matches your contacts to the voter file, easily IDs democrats, and has different easy-to-use tools to quickly text people in swing states, in abortion referenda states, etc. too.
