There's so much talk in the Trump administration about erasing a substantial portion of black history from our nation's history books and museums -- which is unbelievably terrible. And it's unbelievable that black voters would still support Trump in view of all this.
This was a deeply depressing interview mostly because it left, to me, so much unanswered. What exactly are these black people finding Trump has done well for the US economy and them individually? What do they like about his manner? His language? What do they like about the fact that he is turning the US into a white Evangelical fascist state? What is wrong with them?! Maybe this is not a "correct" question but seriously though. I am sure this was challenging for you but could you consider re-doing such interviews with questions from us?
What struck me watching this (on CNN) is that we Dems/Independents have to share info much more outside of our silos to convey not opinions/analyses but emerging, established facts. If that means sharing on TikTok, so be it.
Fascinating! I love your willingness to open-heartedly engage with people of different perspectives. I think we could all benefit for a whole lot more conversations across the divides. Not trying to win an arguments, but having authentic and honest dialogue where we can share what we believe and hear what others believe, without demeaning each other’s humanity, dignity, or intelligence.
UGH...and that's a wrap! These people are "in a completely different news environment" and that is true...and where disinformation breeds like rabbits in a cage :-(
70 y.o. white male here with 47 years as a UPS Teamster working with a number of personalities, genders, and races over the years. FWIW, I also happen to have an M.S. Degree which is why I describe myself as a Jack of all Trades and Master of Some. ;-)
You are absolutely spot on with your analysis about the news sources that Trump supporters are receiving their (mis)information from….both Black and White. A majority of Black and White blue collar UPS drivers here in Ohio supported Trump. It makes absolutely no sense for several reasons:
1) Republicans have never been pro labor / pro Union and do everything they can to eliminate Unions, OSHA, etc.. Right to Work states have increased over the years. How could a majority of my Union Brothers and Sisters ever vote for a party that was anti labor?
2) I have been totally surprised that many of my Black coworkers also supported Trump. This interview you did was extremely interesting to me in order to gain insight into their thinking. What I. believe we’re observing here is how Trump the supreme charismatic narcissistic conman is being assisted by a number of obscure allies like social media (Tik Tok as mentioned), books, and far Right news sources like NewsMax. Trump has coined the term “Fake News” and it has definitely been effective. CNN is a dirty word in the eyes of MAGA. Most common responses I get from Trump supporters when I try to point out some of the dangerous characteristics of Trump is, “You must watch CNN” or “You need to watch something other than CNN”. FWIW, I have ALL kinds of news apps on my phone as I find it very important to keep up with what Trump supporters are tuning into.
Kudos for pointing out the fact that the young male in your interview felt like Tik Tok was the “Holy Grail” for getting information that influenced him to support Trump. Totally shocked that he did not realize that getting information from what could be China, Russia, etc., is NOT in the best interest of our country.
The BIG question that we’re both left with is, “WHY do certain groups of people (both Black and White) STILL support Trump even though it is NOT in their best interest to do so?
Keep up the good fight Van!! You are an extremely intelligent person whom I have an immense amount of respect for. Your ability to connect the common working people like myself and others with the elites in Washington is extremely important. Washington elites are often so out of touch with the common working class.

agreed...it's all so sad

I've read that TiKTok is a source of information for many people but this still blew me away! I get it now. I don't like it but I get it. Wow. Scary.
agreed

yes, and it would be awesome if some accurate information is imparted upon those who have been fed misinformation as well

OK well that was totally fascinating. Is anyone asking the white voters?
